Media-induced passivity, a post on the excellent blog Agency and Change, got me thinking about the disconnect between my words and my deeds as regards television and the education of young people.
What would it look like to raise children without TV? Growing up we were restricted to 30 minutes after school, and could watch cartoons on Saturday mornings. But as we got older, that 30 minutes per day slowly grew to an hour, and then more. One of the challenges I’ve confronted over the last two years in the field of community building is the allure of turning inward – curling up and watching television when I get home from work, rather than stepping out into our neighborhood, visiting parents and families who are engaged in transforming our neighborhood.
